I went over and read the thread.

To me, this whole debate is akin to closing the barn door after the horses escape.

When you have a large number of people seeing no big deal, this habit is guaranteed to continue!

The best way to stop switching is to come up with some kind of a system to certify a watch as "original"

This might be some kind of a certificate that you can apply for or some other kind of thing. I am sure something could be set up.

In a similar way to getting coins officially graded.

This will increase the value of un molested watches and thus hopefully protect them.

As it stand things get switched mainly because it increases the value of the item in question.

I am pretty sure all those loose dials getting sold are not just going to dial collectors.

Telling people not to do it is a waste of breath. Profit will always out.

Stephan,

This would be impossible to do and I can't believe you would make such a statement.

All, or most switching is done to restore the watch to original condition and to do that, switchers use original parts.

I know a watch is unmolested if it has the box, label and sales receipt, but I don't know if someone replaced the original dial with an ORIGINAL replacement. Wink Razz Laughing

Stephen, the only way to truly know who to have been there in the store when these were sold.

If that is true then the whole argument about switching is mute because the watch may not have been original anyway. So what does it matter if non original bits get switched for others.

However if a watch is original, regardless of its condition, I still believe some kind of certificate to back up that opinion would increase it's value and thus help to keep it that way.

Sure it is an opinion but so is a valuation certificate. What's the difference.

The problem would be to find someone who's opinion on the matter would be accepted. Alas from what I can see the watch collecting community have a hard time agreeing on anything so I suspect that will be the stumbling block. There just isn't anyone to give such a thing the backing it would need to work.

If you care to look at this thread you will see there was an intense debate going on about the VCC dating service. ( UK )

https://forums.autosport.com/topic/123337-vcc-dating-service/

I can imagine the mess the NAWCC would make of something like this but the more important thing to consider is - why do people get so steamed up about all this.

Answer - because the granting of an official dating certificate makes a BIG difference to the value of your car.

I believe a similar thing would happen to watches if you could ever get some agreed upon system off the ground.
